Attract connections by showing people that
YOU are a career catalyst they want to network with.

Do your work and do it right so people listen when you’re ready to chat and pipe up. But protect your ideas when you chat and pipe up.

Gil Schwartz wrote about a “junior dude” who was “doing it right.”

Over about 6 months, Junior Dude took several steps:

He did his work.

He did his work right.

After proving his abilities, Junior Dude upped his game:

Stopping by Gil Schwartz’s and other people’s offices to chat, “offer a few ideas.”

“Piping up” in staff meetings “and nothing he said was stupid.”

Making some “impressive” statements.

Clearly a gossip ears networker, Gil Schwarz would stop and ask Junior Dude his opinion when he saw him.

“One of these days I might be working for him.”

Advice For Everyone

After leaving an idea in someone else’s office, go to your office and write an email to that person about your idea with a new explanatory detail or two. Save your email in a special file.

Too many colleagues and higher ups steal ideas, so keep a track record of the idea seeds you drop and where you drop them. The explanatory details will prove that the ideas are yours.
